Spoak member and designer Kate White loves a good statement piece. In our latest design challenge with Mitzi, she put her spin on lighting designer Eny Lee Parker's collaboration with Mitzi to create a stunning kitchen space. The prompt was to design a contemporary and organic space with at least two pieces from the collection, and we loved how Kate brought in so many levels to create a cozy and dynamic ambiance. I loved that the prompt was centered around contemporary/organic. I tend to lean more towards mid-century maximalism with bold colors, so it was a great way for me to explore a less 'in your face' style. I also looked at other products outside of lighting that Eny Lee Parker makes and incorporated those as well to create a holistic environment inspired by her specifically.
With design challenges I usually pick a fancy template that grabs my attention before even looking at the pieces we're supposed to incorporate. It gives me a good direction and idea of the 'feel' i'm going for before getting started. I love to play with adding tile and colored walls and Spoak's design tools make that super easy to do.
I love when lighting can blend into the space around it, but once noticed it is a show-stopper. The subtle statement can be really cool. I loved thinking about the functionality of the lighting and not just using it as decor — it should be a strategically placed part of your design.
The unexpected shapes and natural textures were so fun to play with, especially for lighting which tends to be a more permanent fixture in the home. Being really thoughtful about a statement piece can bring such a strong opinion to your design perspective.
My husband and I have been renovating our mid-century a-frame since we bought it last year and lighting has been at the bottom of the priority list so this is such an amazing opportunity to class up the joint with some new fixtures. Bathroom, bedroom, and hallway lighting will all be updated!
